Yiwei and Michelle first crossed paths at a postgraduate Bible study while both were grappling with their PhDs at Sydney University. At the time, their interaction was short, and entirely uneventful. Shortly afterwards, Yiwei departed for the United States to continue his studies, and life carried on.
Two years later, God brought them back together, through a mutual friend's wedding in Sydney. By this stage, Yiwei had rediscovered the concept of exercise after several years of treating his PhD like an long term extreme endurance project that required minimal physical activity. Having recently taken up running and cycling, he was feeling quite pleased with his newfound athleticism. It was during this reunion at their friend's wedding, that Yiwei had the brain space to notice Michelle properly for the first time. Realising she was an economist, he bravely initiated conversation by asking her about ETFs and investing (possibly on purpose, likely by accident). Either way, the strategy worked well enough to continue the conversation.
Yiwei soon discovered that Michelle was also a runner, which presented an obvious opportunity. He asked if she'd like to go for a run together. What began as a casual jog turned into many Parkruns together, long conversations, and gradually discovering that they rather enjoyed each other's company. Somewhere between discussing fun facts and practicing Shanghainese, Yiwei realised he had developed feelings for Michelle before he fully understood what was happening. Michelle, fortunately, didn't run away (except during the actual runs). After many kilometres, nerdy topics of conversation, and spicy-hot meals later, they found themselves in love...
